Do measure the job before you hire a van
A DIY move suits a small house that is already boxed, with help who can actually lift, and a street where a hire van can wait. It is a poor plan for a full family home on a Keighley hill. If you are unsure, describe it on the house removals page and compare that with a day of van hire, fuel and friends.
Don’t treat books like clothes
Small boxes. Heavy items at the bottom. A large box of books is how people hurt themselves on a Thwaites Brow stair. Label the room, not only “kitchen”.
Do plan the parking
Hire vans still need a legal place to stop. Ingrow terraces and Long Lee school times catch people out. Photograph the street. If you need a suspension, ask Bradford Council in time. We do not arrange that for a van we are not running.
Don’t take apart what you cannot rebuild
Beds are reasonable. Gas cookers, plumbing and anything wired in are not a DIY job. Leave fitted kitchens. If a wardrobe will not turn on the landing, stop. Forcing it damages the stair and the furniture.
Do keep a car pack
Keys, medicines, chargers, bedding and the new address documents stay with you. Defrost the fridge the day before. Tell neighbours if you will block a shared drive for an hour, and mean one hour.
When to stop doing it yourself
If there is a piano, a loft, a tight Worth Valley lane, or nobody strong enough for the sofa, book a crew. Get a free quote or call 01535321350. Insurance is provided on our moves. Ask what is covered. A hire van’s cover is a different question for the hire company.
